Indian Paths in the Great Metropolis
The Rockaway path crossed the boundary of the Borough of Queens, as does its successor Jamaica avenue, at Elderts lane, and passed thence almost due east toward Jamaica (101), skirting the south side of the Green hills through the Woodhaven and Richmond Hill districts, and entering Jamaica at Fulton street, where it joined another known trail that led north to Flushing. INDIAN PATHS Evidently proceeding farther east, as Fulton avenue now runs through Woodhull and Ho]Jis, to the present district called Queens, the trail divided there, one branch passing due east to Hempstead, the other in a northeasterly direction to Jericho.
These routes were later known respectively as the South Country road or the South Post-road, and the Middle Post-road or Jericho road. It would seem probable that the Hewlett and the Near Rockaway stations would have been connected with Hempstead by some branch trail proceeding directly south from the Southern post-road at Hempstead, possibly along che Valley Stream road.
