Mr Harrington suggests that the native word axkwonan, "to catch with a net," is the basis, and with the addition of kongh, the equivalent of the Delaware xunk, we derive the meaning of the village name as "the hill near which they fish with nets," a reference to the nearby waters of Hellgate bay, which was doubtless a favorable place for such a known native method of fishing.
