THE SHARON-CROTON CANAL (1822): A proposed canal from the Croton River mouth northward to Sharon, Connecticut. Engineer George Young surveyed the route, associated with John B. Jervis who later built Croton's first dam and aqueduct. Cost estimated at $600,000. The canal would have made Westchester communities into ports. Failed due to inadequate finances and engineering challenges. Its chief legacy: directing Water Commissioners' attention to the Croton River, leading to the 1842 Croton Dam and Aqueduct. BAYREUTH-ON-THE-HUDSON (1907): Opera singer Lillian Nordica planned an American Bayreuth opera festival house at Harmon. She purchased twenty acres between Old Post Road South and Cleveland Drive. The Festival House was designed as a replica of Wagner's Festspielhaus — an open-air theater for 1,900. She consulted Munich architects and planned a 1909 opening. European critics ridiculed the vision. The Metropolitan Opera terminated her contract.
