Library of Congress, Chronicling America 88 words

Superior Times, Superior, Wisconsin, April 21, 1906. Coverage of the completion of the New Croton Dam. The final stone, weighing 3,200 pounds, was ceremonially placed on January 10, 1906.

The dam stood 297 feet high, 1,168 feet across, with a 1,000-foot spillway — the tallest masonry dam in the world at completion. The reservoir extended 20 miles upstream. The dam was built by hundreds of Italian immigrant workers under the padrone labor boss system. Governor Theodore Roosevelt had dispatched the Seventh Regiment during a 1900 workers strike.
